Public Service Announcement – June 30th, 2021

The Billy Bishop/Kerrisdale Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is pleased to announce the recent receipt of a $25,000 grant funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program to enable the Branch to install a stairlift to assist our mobility-challenged members, veterans, and clients to attend functions in our upper hall. We are very grateful for the support we have received from the New Horizons program over the years. As our base of veterans has aged, this support has been essential to maintaining the infrastructure of our Branch, which is also aging.

We would normally commemorate our gratitude for this receipt by hosting an event at our Branch. However, the COVID-19 restrictions presently prohibit this. Accordingly, we are issuing this PSA.

In particular, we would like to thank our long-time Liberal Member of Parliament, the Honourable Hedy Fry for her ongoing support, and Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Employment and Social Development Canada and Minister of Seniors, Deb Schulte. As well, we would like to acknowledge the support of many other individuals, including Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart; Lieutenant-Colonel E.L. Haverstock, Commanding Officer of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada; Mr. Pete Fry, Vancouver City Councilor; Vancouver City Councilors Adrian Carr, Melissa De Genova, and Colleen Hardwick; Heather Deal, current Chair of the Granville Island Council; Mr. J. Brian Archer, President and Director, Citadel Therapy Canine Society; and of course the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

We expect our stairlift to be fully operational by July 1st. For further information, please contact the Branch.

Jim Hilton

I am running for Executive for the Board of the Billy Bishop/Kerrisdale Legion.

I have been serving in a volunteer capacity with the Billy Bishop / Kerrisdale Legion for about 3 years. I was also on the executive of the former Kerrisdale Legion. I have been House and Grounds Executive until the beginning of the pandemic. I was involved in upgrading lighting to LED and liaising with maintenance companies with regards to plumbing and heating. I have been an advisor to the President in regards to outdoor cooking equipment and kitchen repairs and upgrades .

I am interested in fund raising for the branch and with that have supported Karaoke events that were on Saturday nights before the pandemic. I also have been involved in disposing of excess furniture and equipment by selling it on Facebook and Craigslist.

I support the Saturday night Roast Beef dinners, music events and meat draws.

I am 61 years old and have been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 2012.

I am involved in the automotive business sector and employed full time.

I thank you for your support in electing me as a member of the Billy Bishop / Kerrisdale Executive Board

Josh Muir

Josh Muir was born in Winnipeg Manitoba. After high school, he joined the Army Reserves, serving the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders. After two years with that unit, Josh moved to BC in 1996 to study on the island at camosun college. He transferred to the Canadian Scottish Regiment, and served with them for approximately two more years, before moving to Vancouver and transferring again, this time to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Releasing from the primary reserve in 1999, Josh pursued education and worked at YVR for several years.

Always missing his time in the Army, Josh re entered the Primary reserve in 2006, again with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.

After some re training, Josh deployed twice to Afghanistan with 1PPCLI. Task force 1-08 and then 3-09.

Josh was wounded in an IED ambush in early 2010.

Returning to Canada post deployment, Josh found his injuries worsening.

Josh worked full time with the Army until his release of medical grounds in 2014. Since then he has undergone approximately 8 surgeries.

Josh continues to remain active with veterans advocacy and awareness, and has served for over half a decade as President of the Seaforth Regimental Association. He has also been a member of your local branch and was previously on the Executive Board for for two years.

Josh lives in Vancouver, and has a seven-year-old son named Max.
