The Billy Bishop/Kerrisdale Legion Branch 176 was proud to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion with a memorable two-day celebration held on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18, 2026. The event brought together Legion members, veterans, community leaders, local organizations, and the public to commemorate a century of service, remembrance, and community support.
The celebrations began with a formal anniversary ceremony attended by an outstanding group of distinguished guests from across British Columbia and the Vancouver community.
Among those in attendance were Presidents from numerous Royal Canadian Legion branches throughout British Columbia, representatives from The Legion Foundation, Vancouver Granville MP Taleeb Noormohamed, Deputy Mayor Sarah Kirby-Yung, BC/Yukon Command President Bob Underhill, and Michelle Courtney, Executive Director of BC/Yukon Command, along with many other honoured guests and supporters.
The ceremony reflected on the Legion's proud 100-year history of supporting veterans, active service members, first responders, their families, and communities across Canada. Following the official addresses, guests gathered for a ceremonial 100th Anniversary cake cutting, marking this historic milestone together.
The significance of the anniversary extended beyond those attending in person. CBC Television covered the ceremony and broadcast a feature later that day, while Bob Underhill was interviewed live on CBC Radio earlier in the day, helping share the story of the Legion's centennial celebration with audiences across the province.
The official ceremony was both informative and inspiring, honouring the Legion's remarkable history while recognizing the volunteers, members, and community partners who continue to ensure its success for generations to come.
The celebration also highlighted the Legion's ongoing commitment to supporting charitable organizations through its gaming proceeds. Representatives from Hero Dawgs, one of Branch 176's gaming fund recipients, joined the celebration. Carey McBeth attended alongside the organization's therapy dog, "Dawgtor" Brinkley, who quickly became a favourite among guests and demonstrated the important work Hero Dawgs does in supporting veterans and first responders.
The celebrations continued on Saturday, July 18, when Branch 176 welcomed the public for a full day of family-friendly activities, entertainment, live music, museum tours, games, food, and fundraising, bringing together members of all ages to celebrate this historic milestone in true community spirit.
Celebrating Community: Over the course of the day, members, veterans, families, friends, and visitors came together to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Canadian Legion. The event showcased the Legion's enduring commitment to remembrance, community service, and bringing people together while raising funds to support the continued preservation of Branch 176 for future generations.
